What is the Secret to the Perfect Crispy Potato Top in an Air Fryer?
That irresistible contrast between the fluffy, creamy mashed potato and the crunchy, golden edges is what makes a shepherd's pie legendary. To achieve this perfectly in your COSORI air fryer without drying out the meat beneath, follow these two pro-tips:
The Fork Texture Technique: When layering the mashed potato on top of your lamb filling, do not smooth it out flat. Instead, use a fork to rough up the surface, creating lots of little ridges and peaks. The high-velocity hot air will catch these uneven peaks first, crisping them up into gorgeous, golden-brown crunchy bits!
The Egg Wash or Cheese Grate: Brush the ruffled potato top with a tiny bit of melted butter or egg wash, or add a light sprinkle of grated British Cheddar or Red Leicester. This adds an extra layer of savory flavor and helps the top achieve that coveted pub-style caramelized crunch in just 10 minutes.
Shepherd's Pie vs Cottage Pie: What’s the Real Difference?
It is a very common debate in British kitchens, and getting it right builds immense trust with your readers!
The Meat Rules Everything: The difference comes entirely down to the choice of meat. A Shepherd's Pie strictly uses minced lamb (historically because shepherds herd sheep!). If you substitute the lamb for minced beef, the dish officially becomes a Cottage Pie. While both work beautifully in your COSORI air fryer ramekins, this specific recipe embraces the rich, traditional flavor of British lamb.
