Direction
1.Mix the all-purpose flour together with the sugar, yeast.
2.Add water and stir with a wooden spoon until blended and smooth – the batter will be dense but sticky.
3.Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set aside to rise on the counter for an hour.
4.Stir the milk, baking soda and salt together in a small dish and add this to the batter all at once, stirring until blended – the batter will be wet but stretchy.
5.Take a small baking tray and grease well with butter
6.Grease 3 to 4, 100mm tart rings well and place them on the baking tray.
7.Spoon enough batter into each ring so that it spreads to fill the ring and is about 25 mm full.
8.Place baking tray into the Cosori Dual Blaze Smart Air Fryer basket.
9.Select air fryer and adjust time to 5 minutes then press Start/Pause.
10.Cook the crumpets for about 5 minutes, loosening the rings part way through, until golden brown on the bottom (and bubbles break through the top of each crumpet), then remove the rings and cook another 5 minutes, but not brown.
11.Remove crumpets when done.
Why Is the Air Fryer Better Than a Toaster for Crumpets?
While a standard toaster is the traditional choice, using your COSORI air fryer takes this British classic to a whole new level of texture:
Even Heat Distribution: A toaster applies direct radiant heat to the flat surfaces, often burning the edges before the chewy middle warms through. The 360° rapid hot air in an air fryer envelops the entire crumpet, giving it an incredibly uniform shatteringly crisp base while keeping the crumbly honeycomb top light and soft.
The "Melt-as-you-Bake" Advantage: In a toaster, you have to wait until it pops up to add your toppings. In the air fryer, you can add a thick slice of British Cheddar or a layer of Marmite during the last 2 minutes of cooking. The cheese will melt, bubble, and cascade beautifully into the holes, creating a decadent grilled cheese crumpet you could never achieve in a toaster!
Top Topping Ideas for Your Air-Fried Crumpets
To make the most of those deep honeycomb holes, here are the ultimate topping combinations favored in British households:
1. The Classic Butter Ocean: Keep it simple with a generous slab of high-quality salted British butter. Let it melt completely into the holes until it puddles at the bottom.
2. The Posh Toastie: Spread a thin layer of Marmite or sweet branston pickle, load it with grated Mature Cheddar, and air fry until bubbling and brown.
3. The Sweet Treat: Brush with a little coconut oil before air frying, and finish with a drizzle of orange blossom honey or golden syrup and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
